Concerts

At the Gallery 345
Date: February 6, 2012
Location: Gallery 345 at 345 Sorauren Avenue Toronto ON M6R 2G5

The Tokai Quartet will perform at Gallery 345 which is a century-old warehouse in Toronto’s West end that was originally built in the 1890s to manufacture pianos. This is the perfect venue to enjoy the displayed art at the Gallery while listening to a chamber music concert and enjoying a glass of vine in the intermission.

We will perform  Mendelsohn’s last String Quartet which he wrote in memory of his beloved sister Fanny.  The highly emotional piece is accompanied by Mozart’s last quartet which he wrote for the Prince of Prussia who was an avid amateur cellist. Of the second movement Alfred Einstein said: “It seems to mingle the bliss and sorrow of a farewell to life. How beautiful life has been! How sad! How brief!” And on that note we have Shostakovich’s shortest quartet which was also written in memory of a beloved. He dedicated this work to his first wife Nina. It is a compact work, lasting a mere thirteen minutes, but it covers a much broader expanse than its brevity might initially suggest.
